A new feature: a look at members of the United Federation of Planets (and some non-members that are often listed as members). The first on the list (and with such a name, the first on any list) is Aaamazzara.

Aaamazzarite

  • Federation Member: Aaamazzara
  • Member since: At least the 2270s.
  • Rationale: There is no direct evidence to support Federation membership, but it is assumed the alien ambassadors seen in San Francisco are Federation ambassadors.

Not much is known about the Aaamazzarites. They were designed by Fred Philips and Robert Fletcher for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. As with most of the elaborate aliens designed for that movie, they were barely glimpsed in the final product, but despite their brief appearance in the San Francisco airtram scene, Philips and Robert did prepare a brief background history, published in The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

The Aaamazzarites are somewhat confusingly described as “Therbians from Aaamazzara”. They are humanoid species that share some characteristics with Earth bees or spiders. They are capable of biochemically producing a sort of material from their bodies from wich they can create clothing, furniture and other useful items. The costumes worn by the Aaamazzarite actors were actually modeled in clay and then cast in rubber to create an appropriate ’spun’ look.

That is basically all that is known about the Aaamazzarites. I have not heard of any references to the Aaamazzarites in non-canon material such as novels and the role-playing games, either.

Aren’t you going to make available the list of Federation members in a more systematic format again? I’m missing it already.

Bernd: If you click on the Category link on the right, you should still get a list of the members.

This format allows me to edit ‘entries’ a lot easier than before, and it also allows the format to be a bit less restricted.

Although I might include that list of ‘quick stats’ in the excerpt of the article… Hmm. In a few days I’ll add a few new ones, stay tuned ;)
