This week, a new update with a number of historical flags.

Flags of the Andorian Empire and the Alpha Centauri colony.

First up are the flags of the Andorian Empire and Alpha Centauri. Both are based on designs featured in the Star Fleet Technical Manual. The Andorian standard is a combination of the Enterprise style and the colorful flag Franz Joseph designed. The Alpha Centauri design is essentially the same as the one in the book, although I replaced the Cyrillic text.

Flags of the United Nations of Earth.

The flags of Earth have featured sparingly in Star Trek. First, the current flag of the United Nations as a precursors to the later United Earth flags. Enterprise showed us a rather peculiar flag with just one olive wreath. The early TOS design is a conjectural design based on the UE emblem seen on uniforms. The 23rd century UN-like flag was featured in the Technical Manual. The green flag was created for the Khitomer scenes in The Undiscovered Country. It was never seen close-up, so it’s somewhat of a conjectural design.

Various Khitomer Conference flags.

Talking of Khitomer, here are more interpretations of flags seen at the conference.

United Earth seal and insignia.

Lastly, the United Earth seal seen in “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, and the uniform insignia seen in TOS and the movies. I’ve tried to connect the two styles of insignia as being of some kind of Solar System fleet or command. I’ve also created an Eastern hemisphere version of the Americas seal.

Welcome to a new feature showcasing logos, insignia, flags and other symbols found in the Star Trek universe. First up, a selected overview of Federation flags and symbols.

Federation symbols and flags in the 22nd century.

There is plenty of conjecture involved with regards to the dating. I’ve interpreted the Enterprise Federation logo seen in that horrific Riker episode as the Coalition of Planets seal, as a forerunner to the UFP proper. As a first UFP seal I’ve used the classic design from Franz Joseph’s Star Fleet Technical Manual. The Vulcan conference banner is my own design.

Federation symbols and flags in the 23rd century.

In TOS, we saw the little red flag depicted above used as a kind of Federation device. It could be the actual flag of the Federation, but by the very casual way it’s handled in the episode, it may have been a less official symbol of either Starfleet, the Starnes colony itself, or the Federation. I’m assuming it was the Starfleet ensign, similar in role to American Navy Jack.

Federation symbols and flags in the 24th century.

In the 24th century we are introduced to the most commonly known style of flags, shown multiple times in TNG and DS9. In the world of novels, the Palais de la Concorde is the seat of the Federation President in Paris.
